Steve Jobs used to say that design is about saying no. The phrase is short and seems obvious, but it inverts the instinct of most people. The instinct is to add: one more function, one more option, one more setting, until the app looks complete. Jobs pointed the other way. Good design is what is left after you cut.
At BLA, that phrase organizes the way of deciding what goes into each app. When an app starts, ideas are not what is missing. The opposite is: there are too many ideas. Every imaginable function wants in, every feature seems valuable, every improvement seems necessary. If they all came in, the app would not be complete. It would be heavy, confusing and, at the limit, unviable.
That is why the work is not addition, it is pruning. Both the ideas and the features go through a cut. The question is not what else can we put in. It is what this app needs to do well the thing it exists for, and what is left over around that.
The center of the app, the function it exists for, comes in first and comes in whole. Everything else is organized around it, and everything else is negotiable. If a feature does not serve the center, it does not come in now. It may come in later, it may never come in. What it cannot do is get in the way of what matters.
Saying no has a real emotional cost. Every cut idea was, at some moment, a good idea. To cut is not to despise, it is to prioritize. It is to recognize that making the idea viable, making the app doable and putting it into the world is worth more than keeping it growing forever in a wish list.
That same no applies to the launch queue. You cannot do everything at the same time. Deciding what goes into each app is a first no. Deciding which app comes first is a second no, said to all the others that will have to wait. Priority is a sequence of organized refusals.
The result is what differentiates an app that was finished from an app that was inflated. The finished app has focus, has lean weight, has one thing it does very well. The inflated app has a bit of everything and nothing whole. The difference between the two is almost never in what was added. It is in what was refused.
Saying yes is easy and pleasant, it always looks like progress. Saying no is uncomfortable and looks like loss. But it is the no that gives shape. Each BLA app is, above all, the set of things that were left out so that the right thing could stay.
