You open it and the board already has numbers. Swipe to one side and they all slide together to the edge. Where two equal tiles meet, they become one, doubled: 2 and 2 make 4, two 4s make 8. With every move, a new tile is born in an empty cell.
It is a rule you learn on the first move and never forget. The depth is not in the rule, it is in what the rule asks of you: read the board, picture where everything will slide, and choose your side.
The name points to a number. You reach it by doubling, one power of two at a time: 2, 4, 8, 16, and on. But when 2048 finally shows up, the game does not stop. Then comes 4096, 8192. The number that gives the app its name is a stop along the way, not the finish line. From there it is you and your attention, as far as it reaches.
There are two boards. The 4×4, tight, where every move counts and the end comes fast. And a roomier 5×5 that breathes, for a longer game. Each one keeps its own game and its own best score. You switch whenever you want, and nothing is lost: what was on the 4×4 stays there, waiting for you to come back.
There is no back button. Every swipe stays. The wrong direction, the corner that filled up, the tile born in the worst spot, you play with all of it. It is not harshness, it is what gives the move its weight. You think before you act, because afterward there is no pretending you did not.
The tiles are set in book typography, drawn with care. Each time two of them meet, there is a tap under your finger. When several merge in the same move, the tap turns into a tiny run, like popcorn. The tiles grow with a soft animation, no jolt. MM48 was made to be good to hold, not only to play.
It opens offline. No sign-up, no ads, nothing cutting into the game to offer you something. What you play stays on your iPhone. You open it and you are already playing, in line, on the couch, in the five minutes before sleep.
